As an ID, we will be working with Open Educational Resources (OER) and other contents which are Creative Commons licensed. With abundance of freeware, shareware, Creative Commons licensed contents, and OER, a Digital Media Checklist such as the one below can help me to evaluate an OER or digital media that we intend to use.
After developing my criteria, I used Adobe Acrobat to prepare the checklist. The resulting checklist does not take much time to complete and can be used by both ID and SME while selecting content.
For the purpose of this assignment, I have applied the above checklist to evaluate an OER resource (https://library.educause.edu/-/media/files/library/2019/7/eli7169.pdf) which I will be using in my module 'Developing critical media/digital literacy'.
The content I evaluated clearly specifies CC license terms. Creator of this content makes necessary attributions and provides necessary links to external resources. Use of sub-headings and bullet points give it a user-friendly structure. Since this resource cannot be modified, it will be a useful resources for learners to refer to deepen and extend their learning.
Upon reflection, I realized that I should have added whether an OER content is flash-enabled to ensure the content works on all browsers. Visual appeal of the content I think is important too, which I will include in my updated checklist. Similarly, it would also be useful to add a comment column. I did not want my checklist to be crowded and so placed a comment row at the end of the checklist.
Clearly, this has been a useful exercise, particularly because the checklist required me to work methodically/systematically. I will certainly need to be mindful to the aspects of CC licensing that determines freedom to use the resource for my module.
