What makes a visual design appealing and engaging for learners? How can this visual design improve learning and retention? Incorporating some fundamental principles of visual design can help our learners learn effectively. These fundamental principles of visual design can help us effectively organize and present information in our learning design. Principles of visual designs can be applied not only to create user-friendly interfaces but also present engaging learning content to improve learning, retention and retrieval.
Visual design certainly improves design’s/product’s aesthetic appeal and usability with suitable images, typography, space, layout and color. But it is much more more than mere aesthetics. Our learning design is strategic in that we place elements and information carefully to achieve effective learning design. I have presented the Principles of creating a visual design in an infographic below.

The Purpose of this infographic is to provide guidance to graphic designers in an agency. This can serve as a checklist for them to refer to when needed. Often a need for some guideline has been expressed, and this infographic can be included in the guideline document.
While preparing this infographic , I have used one background picture. The background picture was much darker, and so I added saturation level of 40 so that the background provides better contrast with the bullet points as well as the icons. The title demonstrates contrast, as well as provides contrast in the way information is laid out on the page. Similarly each bullet point is made the focal point by subordinating the background graphics (sticky notes).
Since the icons were floating objects, I merged them with the background so it was much easier to work with. The text boxes has also been made transparent to give it a cleaner look.
In terms of choice of colors, I have used black, orange and dark brown which also matches with the color of the icons. Choice of icons also enhances the message of each bullet point.
There is repetition of color, the 3 X 3 layout informs alignment - both of this address the principle of proximity in this infographic.
Having reviewed some design principles, I have updated my digital media checklist prepared last week. This week I have incorporated elements that relate to visual design such as visually appeal, balance, unity, space so that learners can find the content engaging which ultimately aids learning and long-term retention.
